...promoting investment in environmentally, socially and culturally sustainable food systems
"Studies have proven that shifting food spending to locally grown foods reduces distribution costs, creates jobs and keeps money in local economies. They've also shown that those companies using sustainable practices, especially organic farming methods, are healing the land and creating healthier, more food-secure communities."

Slow Money Austin "Alums" Take National Stage to Promote Investment in Local, Sustainable Food
Companies Chosen to Showcase at
Annual Slow Money National Gathering

Austin, TX — June 16, 2010 — Several companies advancing a healthy and organic food agenda for the Central Texas region, and beyond, leapt onto the national stage at this year's Slow Money National Gathering, June 9-11 at Shelburne Farms in Shelburne, Vermont.

The three Central Texas companies participating in the national Entrepreneur Showcase were:

Greenling
A grocery delivery service bringing organic and local food direct from farms to customers' doors.
"Participating in this showcase was an incredible experience for Greenling. I was able to spread the Greenling message to hundreds of people and talk with several interested investors. There is significant momentum behind the Slow Money movement and real dollars being deployed into local food systems." — Founder & CEO Mason Arnold

Coyote Creek Organic Feed Milk
A commercial organic feed mill aiming to meeting growing demand throughout the south and southeast.
"The huge tent on the beautiful grounds of Shelburne Farms was a giant, old time, revival meeting. People brought their hearts and passions to this awesome meeting, and I came home buoyed up and optimistic about the future of organic and sustainable food in our nation. I was very proud to be a part of the Austin delegation. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to the vision of Woody Tasch, founder of the Slow Money Alliance." — Founder & CEO Jeremiah Cunningham

Rhythm Superfoods
A producer of raw, vegan, nutrient dense, superfood snacks & meals.
"Sharing this moment with the 600 people present at the Slow Money event at Shelburne Farms solidified my commitment to making fresh and nutritious foods available to everyone." — Founder & COO Robert Larkin

Also appearing in Shelburne was San Francisco-based Farmland LP, a company that acquires conventional farmland and converts it into certified organic, sustainable farmland — and another Slow Money Austin alum. Farmland LP Director Craig Wichner, a presenter and panelist at April's Slow Money Austin Investor Dinner and separate City Hall Showcase, quickly came to appreciate the investment opportunities Central Texas represents, in turn advancing his company's time horizon for entering the Texas market.

These four companies represent the gamut of a healthy local food system:

    — protecting and enriching the land;

    — providing organic feed and other inputs;

    — ensuring responsible distribution that leverages technology to reduce impact and generate economic value to producers, and;

    — delivering end-products and services that are genuinely healthy and environmentally responsible.

"Having these companies on stage at the Slow Money National Gathering validates the work being done on the ground here in Austin," says Joanne Marino, executive director of Slow Money Austin. "It inspires us all to keep pushing, keep promoting, and keep bridging the gap with investors and individuals on behalf of those companies setting out to change the region for the better."
