Slow Money Austin invites you to join our friends at Austin350 to a festive seasonal mixer. World leaders are gathering in Cancun, Mexico this week to discuss carbon reduction and we'll gather to raise a local pint and meet neighbors dedicated to support Bill McKibben's 350.org initiative.

Slow Money Austin Salon Series

Slow Money Austin Salon Series... are informal get-togethers for discussing and contemplating a "slow money" world. At these gatherings, we will:

  • discuss topics relating to the business of local food:
    • organic farming practices and economics;
    • health of our land and our community;
    • businesses that are making great tasting, healthy local food;
    • initiatives in education and awareness;
    • innovations in co-operative, funding and investment models that help sustainable agriculture grow.
  • meet community members who share an appreciate for the economic and environmental importance of making local food more available.
  • ask any questions and share personal insights about local food issues.

September 16

Location: Brave New Books (map)
Date: Thursday, September 16, 2010
Time: 8 p.m.
Discussion: True Health - Only by restoring the broken connections can we be healed. Connection is health. And what our society does it's best to hide from us is how ordinary, how how commonly attainable, health is. We lose our health -- and create profitable diseases and dependences -- by failing to see the direct connections between living and eating, eating and working, working and loving. In gardening, for instance, one works with the body to feed the body. The work, if it is knowledgeable, makes for excellent food. And it makes one hungry. The work thus makes eating both nourishing and joyful, not consumptive, and keeps the eater from getting fat and weak. This is health, wholeness, a delight. And such a solution, unlike the typical industrial solution, does not cause new problems. -- Wendell Berry

August 19

Location: Ventana del Soul Cafe & Cultural Center (map)
Date: Thursday, August 19, 2010
Time: 7 p.m.
Discussion: Mantras abound: Eat local! Eat seasonal! Eat slow! Support local farmers! Yet how can such ideas take root without considering viability? What is the economic landscape of Austin's local food movement? Who are the key players? What do food sector jobs look like? What about affordability? If local and sustainable food went mainstream, who benefits?

Understanding & Investing in Local Sustainable Food: A Slow Money Primer

Location: Ventana del Soul Cafe & Cultural Center (map)
Date: Thursday, July 29, 2010
Time: 7 p.m.
Discussion: If we want to see local food proliferate for economic, health, environmental and community reasons, Austin needs to make the business of growing, distributing, preparing, serving and composting local food profitable endeavors. Business development requires investment. How do we invest in our local food system?
